Abstract:
Drawing on ethnographic research in segregated special education schools in urban China, this talk examines how disability reshapes motherhood, fatherhood, and kinship within deeply gendered familial and social structures. While parents with special needs children experience profound stigma and identify crisis, mothers often engage in narrative moral re-envisioning, while fathers develop forms of “caring masculinities” that complicate conventional patriarchal ideals. These emergent forms of moral becoming, however, are profoundly gendered, with mothers often seeking mutual support and peer bonding at the school, while fathers tend to remain socially and emotionally detached from one another. Sometimes families arrange for relatives, such as grandparents, to accompany children throughout the school day while parents work. By tracing the intertwined labor of education and care, this paper illuminates disability not simply as a private family burden, but as a transformative social process that reconfigures kinship, intimacy, and moral life in contemporary China.
